Fourth Dimension and Beyond
We live in a world of three dimensions. It means that the physical objects around us have a basic geometry that includes length, breadth/width and height. We have the ability to perceive the things around us in 3D. We can imagine a world in one dimension where the objects can only move in a straight line. We can also imagine a world in two dimension where the objects can move in two directions and within that plane. No surprise, we are also able to understand and imagine the world of three dimensions, the very 3D world we live in. Now the confusion here are "Is there the fourth dimension? Can a universe of n-dimensions where n is any arbitrary positive number be possible? What would a universe greater than three dimensions look like?"
To answer these
questions, let's dig into a basic world of one dimension where any object can
move only in a straight line. The objects/organisms in that dimension will have
no concept of existence of a plane or a 2D world and hence they would not be
able to perceive the world of two dimensions and beyond. The same would apply
for two dimensional world and so on. With this, rises next confusion if the
different dimensional worlds are entirely different. It is partly true. Let's
assume that there are infinitely many straight lines bunched up together. What
we would see would be a plane or a sheet. Similarly, if we stack up a bunch of
infinitely many planes on top of each other, there would be a formation of a
three dimensional object. Thus, we now come to the point that higher dimensions
are nothing but a group of infinitely many objects of a lower dimensional world
in a correct geometry. By "correct geometry", I mean to say that we
cannot form higher dimensional object in any random patterns. For example, if
we connect two dimensional object like a sheet of paper side by side, we will
not be creating any of the three dimensional object, we will only be increasing
the size of the plane of the paper. But if we stack up the sheet of paper one
by one to form a pile, we will be creating a 3D object.
With this logic, we now
come to a point that the fourth dimension would be a world made of infinitely
many 3D world but in a correct geometry which we still are clueless about. Like
we can perceive through the world of one dimension and two dimensions, an
object of 4D would be able to see through the 3D world too. It would be able to
see through objects like human bodies or any other material like it's nothing
but natural for it. The same would apply for higher dimensions. Now when we
realize that this is godlike and seems impossible, we come to ask if higher
dimensions even exist. Well, the mathematics suggests that it actually does and
it is one of the few reasons why mathematics is considered "the language
of gods" and even if we are able to calculate the tens of thousands of
dimensions, we are only solving the components of that dimensional world. We
still have no idea about the visualization of higher dimensions.
Some people in this field take "time" as the fourth dimension. We may
actually consider "time" a quantifiable component but personally, I
don’t feel like it is the fourth component for a world of four dimensions. It
is because I feel like we have some sense of flow of time even in the one dimensional
world like representing the motion of any object with respect to time. Does
this mean I do not believe in the existence of higher dimensions? I do believe
in the possibility of existence of higher dimensions. Do I have any idea about
how the higher dimensions would look like? Well, if I had even the slightest of
the idea about it, I would not be a creature of this three dimensional world!
